Camp Field
Originally established in 1916 as the Alfred E. Burr Branch, the library was located in a room of the Burr School. In 1929 the branch moved to Maple Avenue and renamed Camp Field. The name derives from the military campground in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, which stretched south and east from the site of the current library.
The Camp Field building, at the corner of Barker Street and Campfield Avenue, opened in 1937. It was made possible through the gift of Mrs. James T. Goodwin and designed by J. Sage Goodwin. Camp Field was the first branch property owned by Hartford Public Library.
